Actions from the university libraries of Santa Catarina to combat disinformation

The presented research aimed to verify actions to combat disinformation developed in university libraries in Santa Catarina belonging to institutions linked to the Associação Catarinense das Fundações Educacionais (ACAFE). Furthermore, disinformation is conceptualized and its presence in the digital environments of the libraries studied is identified. The concepts of information, disinformation, fake news, and post-truth are approached. The research is of a descriptive nature, having as methodological procedures the documental survey and the use of a quality-quantitative approach in the analysis of the data collected from the websites and social media of 16 (sixteen) libraries of the ACAFE system. By analysing two central categories of research: the presence of libraries on websites and social media, and actions are taken to combat disinformation, the main results indicate that most libraries are active in virtual spaces, but only a small portion of them take steps to combat disinformation. The data allow us to conclude that the mission of university libraries in the mediation of information must be strengthened and encouraged so that they may act mainly in combating disinformation and occupy virtual spaces to better meet the demands of users.
