The objective of this paper is to discuss some aspects related to the Sustainable Development Goal 2: “end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture”, specifically, from the perspective of hunger and poverty in rural context, through a bibliographical and documental research, in the format of a theoretical review. The concepts of Food Security and Nutrition and the Human Right to Adequate Food were approached and, also, some challenges to combat hunger and poverty in the Brazilian rural context. Finally, it was concluded that the State has a fundamental role in this process, as a promoter of sustainable rural development, with a focus on family farming, which can improve the structural inequalities in force and democratize the access to healthy and adequate food.
