Understanding of undergraduate students about Food and Nutrition Security and Human Right to Adequate Food

The guarantee of human Right to Adequate Food demands for a reflection regarding the contribution of the University as for producing knowledge and training actors. This work aimed to analyze the conceptions of undergraduate students in Law, Nutrition and Social Work concerning Food and Nutrition Security and Human Right to adequate food. For this purpose, a descriptive survey was conducted with students from a public university in the state of Rio de Janeiro, who entered the university in the second semester of 2013 and, in the first semester of 2017, were at least at the eighth semester of their university course when data collection began. We used a questionnaire with open and closed questions about the presence of these subjects in the curricula and evaluated the students' understanding of those subjects. 51 Law students, 19 from Nutrition course and 13 from Social Work course participated in the study. The knowledge and presence of the subjects occurred differently in the courses. The students in the Nutrition course had more prior knowledge and a broader understanding of the concepts, which were more present in the disciplines. Although the undergraduates recognize important aspects related to food and nutritional insecurity, there is a need to broaden this discussion at the university in order to a larger number of people to be formed to defend the Human Right to Adequate Food and to contribute to the conception and implementation of public policies that guarantee access to food and income.
