Resumo: Deaf young people, aged between 12 and 14, were investigated withregard to their cognitive development. Educated for the last seven years in abilingual approach, their possibilities in mathematics in the higher junior schoolwere evaluated. Results were compared to those of a 1996 research which hadthe same aims, or rather, the evaluation of deaf adolescents of the same agebracket, albeit educated from an oral approach. Results show that the orallyeducated deaf young people and the bilingually educated ones lacked anycognitive structure to understand the mathematical concepts of the above mentioned schooling level. Although bilingual deaf students had a higherschooling level when compared to those of the former research, all students hada two-year cognitive deficiency when compared to non-deaf children. The“schooling success” of bilingual students in mathematics at the higher juniorschool is consequently highlighted.

The“schooling success” of bilingual students in mathematics at the higher juniorschool is consequently highlighted.
