Carbohydrates in the pre-workout meal and their relation to physical and sports performance: an integrative review

Resumo: | Carbohydrate is considered as the main source of energy for living beings because its substrates are used by several metabolic pathways responsible for energy production in the body. The consumption of certain macronutrients at specific times in relation to the training time is one of the main strategies used in sports nutrition. The present study aims to analyze the effects on physical and sports performance with the use of carbohydrates in the pre-workout meal. This is an integrative review of the literature available in the PubMed and Scielo databases, using the descriptors: “exercise”, “athletic performance” and “carbohydrates”. Only clinical trials published between 2016 and 2022 were included. After reviewing the literature, 12 studies were selected that evaluated, among other aspects, physical performance in different sports modalities using pre-exercise nutritional strategies that include carbohydrates in its composition. The results found suggest that the pre-workout consumption of carbohydrates can improve performance in strength exercises, but not in aerobic exercises. |

El consumo de determinados macronutrientes en momentos específicos en relación con el tiempo de entrenamiento es una de las principales estrategias utilizadas en la nutrición deportiva. El presente estudio tiene como objetivo analizar los efectos sobre el rendimiento físico y deportivo del uso de carbohidratos en la comida pre-entrenamiento. Esta es una revisión integradora de la literatura disponible en las bases de datos PubMed y Scielo, utilizando los descriptores: “ejercicio físico”, “rendimiento atlético” y “carbohidratos”. Solo se incluyeron ensayos clínicos publicados entre 2016 y 2022. Tras revisar la literatura, se seleccionaron 12 estudios que evaluaron, entre otros aspectos, el rendimiento físico en diferentes modalidades deportivas utilizando estrategias nutricionales preejercicio que incluyen carbohidratos en su composición. Los resultados encontrados sugieren que el consumo de carbohidratos en el pre-entrenamiento puede mejorar el rendimiento en ejercicios de fuerza, pero no en ejercicios aeróbicos.O carboidrato é considerado como a principal fonte de energia para os seres vivos pois seus substratos são utilizados por diversas vias metabólicas responsáveis pela produção de energia no corpo. O presente estudo objetiva analisar os efeitos na performance física e esportiva do uso de carboidratos na refeição de pré-treino. Trata-se de uma revisão integrativa da literatura disponível nos bancos de dados da PubMed e Scielo, utilizando-se dos descritores: “exercício físico”, “performance esportiva” e “carboidratos”. Foram inclusos apenas ensaios clínicos publicados entre os anos 2016 e 2022. Após a revisão da literatura, foram selecionados 12 estudos que avaliaram, entre outros aspectos, a performance física em diferentes modalidades de esporte com o uso de estratégias nutricionais pré-exercício que incluem carboidratos em sua composição.
