Resumo: This study aimed to identify the weaknesses and potentialities about the teaching career in higher education in the perception of nursing students. It was a qualitative, exploratory-descriptive research, carried out in a federal public university in the extreme south of the country. The data collection was carried out in July 2017 with 27 participants, through semi-structured interview with open and closed questions. . The data were analyzed through textual discursive analysis, with two categories emerging: Weaknesses and Potentialities about the teaching career from the perspective of nursing students. It was possible to observe that the weaknesses identified are found in teacher training and that the potential identified by academics should be increasingly encouraged.

Fue una investigación cualitativa, exploratoria-descriptiva, realizada en una universidad pública federal en el extremo sur del país. La recolección de datos se realizó en julio de 2017 con 27 participantes, a través de una entrevista semiestructurada con preguntas abiertas y cerradas. Los datos se analizaron mediante un análisis textual discursivo, con dos categorías emergentes: debilidades y potencialidades sobre la carrera docente desde la perspectiva de los estudiantes de enfermería. Fue posible observar que las debilidades identificadas se encuentran en la formación de docentes y que el potencial identificado por los académicos debe ser cada vez más alentado.Esse estudo teve como objetivo identificar as fragilidades e potencialidades acerca da carreira docente de ensino superior na percepção de acadêmicos de enfermagem. Tratou-se de uma pesquisa qualitativa, exploratório-descritiva, realizado em uma universidade pública federal do extremo sul do País. A coleta de dados foi realizada no mês de julho de 2017 com 27 participantes, por meio de entrevista semiestruturada com questões abertas e fechadas. Os dados foram analisados por meio da análise textual discursiva, emergindo duas categorias: Fragilidades e Potencialidades acerca da carreira docente na perspectiva dos acadêmicos de enfermagem. Foi possível observar que as fragilidades identificadas encontram-se na formação docente e que as potencialidades identificadas pelos acadêmicos devem ser cada vez mais incentivadas.
