Knowledge and pratices of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus about diabetic foot

Summary: Objective: To know the knowledge and practices of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus about diabetic foot. Methodology: Field research, qualitative, exploratory and descriptive. Data collection carried out between April and August 2016 at the home of eight people with type 2 diabetes mellitus, through narrative interview recorded on audio. For the analysis of the data the operative proposal was used. Results: Two units of meaning were identified: “I have never heard of / Worse is that I knew”: the knowledge about the diabetic foot and “I take care of my feet a lot”: the care practices. The data revealed the ignorance of some participants, however, those who knew, lived with some complication of diabetes mellitus or had a family member with diabetic foot. The care practices identified were hygiene, hydration of the feet, checking for possible cracks and / or wounds. Learning in relation to practices took place through health professionals and educational strategies. Conclusions: It is necessary for nurses to know the knowledge and practices about the diabetic foot of people with type 2 diabetes mellitus to develop health promotion measures, through health groups and / or nursing consultations, according to individuality of each person.

Metodología: Investigación de campo, cualitativa, exploratoria y descriptiva. Recolección de datos realizada entre abril y agosto de 2016 en el hogar de ocho personas con diabetes mellitus tipo 2, a través de una entrevista narrativa grabada en audio. Para el análisis de los datos se utilizó la propuesta operativa. Resultados: Se identificaron dos unidades de significado: "Nunca he oído hablar / Lo peor es que lo sabía": el conocimiento sobre el pie diabético y "Cuido mucho mis pies": las prácticas de cuidado. Los datos revelaron la ignorancia de algunos participantes, sin embargo, aquellos que sabían, vivían con alguna complicación de la diabetes mellitus o tenían un familiar con pie diabético. Las prácticas de cuidado identificadas fueron higiene, hidratación de los pies, control de posibles grietas y / o heridas. El aprendizaje en relación con las prácticas se llevó a cabo a través de profesionales de la salud y estrategias educativas. Conclusiones: Es necesario que las enfermeras conozcan el conocimiento y las prácticas sobre el pie diabético de las personas con diabetes mellitus tipo 2 para desarrollar medidas de promoción de la salud, a través de grupos de salud y / o consultas de enfermería, según la individualidad de cada persona.Objetivo: Conhecer os saberes e as práticas de pessoas com diabetes mellitus tipo 2 acerca do pé diabético. Metodologia: Sugiro utilizar letra minúscula após dois pontos Pesquisa de campo, qualitativa, exploratória e descritiva. Coleta de dados realizada entre abril e agosto de 2016, no domicílio de oito pessoas, com diabetes mellitus tipo 2, por meio de entrevista narrativa gravada em áudio. Para a análise dos dados utilizou-se a proposta operativa. Resultados: Identificaram-se duas unidades de significado: “Nunca ouvi falar/Pior é que eu sabia”: os saberes acerca do pé diabético e “Cuido muito dos meus pés”: as práticas de cuidado. Os dados revelaram o desconhecimento de alguns participantes, entretanto, os que conheciam, conviviam com alguma complicação do diabetes mellitus ou tinham familiar com pé diabético. As práticas de cuidado identificadas foram higiene, hidratação dos pés, verificação de possíveis rachaduras e/ou feridas. O aprendizado em relação às práticas se deu por intermédio dos profissionais de saúde e de suas estratégias educativas.
