Use of whey protein, combined or not with vitamin D and resistant exercise in the treatment of sarcopenia in older adults: an integrative review

Resumo: | To perform an integrative review on the use of whey protein, combined or not with vitamin D supplementation and resistance exercise in the improvement of sarcopenia parameters in older adults. This is an integrative review study carried out in the MedLine, Virtual Health Library and PubMed databases, in which randomized, double-blind, controlled and multicenter clinical trials were selectedTwelve studies that investigated the intervention in the control versus placebo groups were evaluated. Whereas 10 related the use of vitamin D-enriched whey protein and 2 studies evaluated the effects of whey protein. As for the association with resistance exercise (RE), 8 of these studies were associated with RE and 4 studies did not. Satisfactory results have been described in the effects of sarcopenia Z score, increase in muscle strength parameters, muscle mass, fat-free mass and physical performance. There are benefits of isolated whey protein supplementation in improving muscle mass, strength and physical performance in elderly patients with sarcopenia, when combined with vitamin D. Protein supplementation associated with RE showed advantageous results for sarcopenia in aging, potentiated with the effect of supplementation. |

Se trata de un estudio de revisión integradora realizado en la base de datos MedLine, Virtual Health Library y PubMed, en el que se seleccionaron ensayos clínicos aleatorizados, doble ciego, controlados y multicéntricos. Se evaluaron doce estudios que investigaron la intervención en los grupos control versus placebo. Mientras que 10 relacionaron el uso de proteína de suero enriquecida con vitamina D y 2 estudios evaluaron los efectos de la proteína de suero. En cuanto a la asociación con el ejercicio de fuerza (RE), 8 de estos estudios tenían una asociación con el RE y 4 estudios no. Se describieron resultados satisfactorios en los efectos del puntaje Z de sarcopenia, en el aumento de los parámetros de fuerza muscular, masa muscular, masa magra y rendimiento físico. Existen beneficios en la suplementación con proteína aislada de suero de leche en la mejora de la masa muscular, la fuerza y el rendimiento físico de las personas mayores con sarcopenia, cuando se combina con vitamina D. La suplementación con proteína asociada a RE mostró resultados ventajosos para la sarcopenia en el envejecimiento, potenciados con el efecto de la suplementación.Realizar uma revisão integrativa sobre o uso da proteína do soro do leite, combinada ou não com a suplementação de vitamina D e o exercício resistido na melhoria de parâmetros da sarcopenia em idosos. Trata-se de um estudo de revisão do tipo integrativa realizada na base de dados MedLine, Biblioteca Virtual em Saúde e PubMed, no qual foram selecionados ensaios clínicos randomizados, duplo-cego, controlado e multicêntrico. Foram avaliados 12 estudos que averiguaram a intervenção nos grupos controle versus placebo. Visto que 10 relacionaram o uso da proteína do soro do leite enriquecida com vitamina D e 2 estudos avaliaram os efeitos da proteína do soro do leite. Quanto a associação com exercício resistido (ER), 8 desses estudos tiveram associação com ER e 4 estudos não tiveram. Foi descrito resultados satisfatórios nos efeitos do escore Z da sarcopenia, no aumento dos parâmetros de força muscular, massa muscular, massa livre de gordura e desempenho físico. Existem benefícios na suplementação isolada de proteína de soro de leite na melhoria da massa muscular, força e desempenho físico de idosos com sarcopenia, quando combinada a vitamina D.
