The role of nutrition and effectiveness in vegetarian athletes

Resumo: | Introduction: Currently, plant-based diets have gained more and more supporters of this lifestyle, aiming for a healthier diet. In the sports environment, many athletes are adopting this food practice and thus end up generating several debates if this type of food offers all the nutrients an athlete needs. Athletes who follow a vegetarian pattern can meet their protein needs through plant sources, when a wide variety of this food is included daily in the diet and energy intake is adequate. Nutrients to watch out for to avoid nutritional deficiencies in vegetarian athletes include protein, n-3 fatty acids, iron, zinc, calcium, iodine, vitamin D and vitamin B12. This work gathers scientific evidence from 2012 to 2022 that addresses food and nutritional needs in vegetarian athletes and aims to discuss their main nutritional deficiencies, energy needs and impact on performance. Based on these studies, the vegetarian diet pattern does not negatively affect the athletes' performance and their nutritional needs are easily met when properly planned. |

En el ámbito deportivo, muchos deportistas están adoptando esta práctica alimentaria y así acaban generando varios debates si este tipo de alimentación ofrece todos los nutrientes que necesita un deportista. Objetivo: Discutir sus principales deficiencias nutricionales, necesidades energéticas e impacto en el rendimiento en atletas que siguen un patrón vegetariano. Metodología: Para realizar este estudio se optó por una modalidad de revisión de literatura, para el levantamiento de literatura se incluyeron monografías y artículos tomados de sitios como Google Scholar, Scielo y PubMed. Este trabajo recopila evidencia científica desde 2012 hasta 2022 que aborda las necesidades alimentarias y nutricionales en deportistas vegetarianos. Resultados y Discusión: Los nutrientes a tener en cuenta para evitar deficiencias nutricionales en atletas vegetarianos incluyen proteínas, ácidos grasos n-3, hierro, zinc, calcio, yodo, vitamina D y vitamina B12. Conclusión: Según estos estudios, el patrón de dieta vegetariana no afecta negativamente el rendimiento de los atletas y sus necesidades nutricionales se satisfacen fácilmente cuando se planifican adecuadamente.Introdução: Atualmente as dietas a base de vegetais têm ganhado cada vez mais adeptos a esse estilo de vida, tendo como objetivo uma alimentação mais saudável. No meio esportivo, muitos atletas estão adotando essa prática alimentar e assim acabam gerando vários debates se esse tipo de alimentação oferece todos os nutrientes que um atleta necessita. Objetivo: Debater suas principais carencias nutricionais, necessidades energeticas e impacto na performance em atletas que seguem um padrão vegetariano. Metodologia: Para a realização desse estudo optou-se por modalidade de revisão bibliografica, para o levantamento da literatura foi incluído monografias e artigos retirados de sites como Google Acadêmico, Scielo e PubMed. Este trabalho reune evidencias cientificas de 2012 até 2022 que abordam sobre alimentação e necessidades nutricionais em atletas vegetarianos. Resultados e Discussões: Os nutrientes a ter em atenção para evitar deficiências nutricionais em atletas vegetarianos incluem as proteínas, ácidos gordos n-3, ferro, zinco, cálcio, iodo vitamina D e vitamina B12.
