The use of digital games for teaching gross anatomy: an experience report

Resumo: | The modern Anatomy education allows the use of digital tools which innovate the way we study the human body. This paper aimed to report our experience and analyse how an anatomy website containing games was accessed in a gross anatomy discipline. The website was provided as an additional (non-mandatory) resource to the topics discussed in the lecture programme, in anatomy. On the website, the student could find several anatomical topics. This was an optional tool and students were not required to access the website nor play the games. The data collected by Google Analytics were tabulated, showing the page views according to the anatomy content and the daily number of page views. During the academic semester, the highest number of views corresponded to the subjects taught during the lectures. Besides, the “peak” of the views always occurred on the days before the assessment tests. It was concluded that games are attractive learning tools and students used them for the coursework in anatomy (especially on the day before assessments), even if this activity was not mandatory. This methodology can be an effective strategy in health blended education to motivate students as an extra-class study. |

El objetivo de este trabajo fue informar la experiencia de usar juegos digitales como material complementario en la enseñanza de la anatomía humana en el curso de odontología y analizar cómo se accedió al sitio web que contiene estos juegos durante un semestre académico. La dirección electrónica se puso a disposición como un recurso adicional (no obligatorio) para el estudio de los temas tratados en las clases tradicionales de anatomía. En el sitio web, el estudiante puede encontrar enlaces a los juegos en diferentes contenidos, con acceso anónimo. Los datos recopilados por Google Analytics mostraron la vista de la página de acuerdo con el tema cubierto y la cantidad de visitas por día. Durante el semestre académico, el mayor número de acceso al sitio web correspondió exactamente a los temas cubiertos por el calendario y el "pico" de acessos siempre ocurrían antes de las evaluaciones de la disciplina. Se concluyó que los juegos eran herramientas de enseñanza atractivas y los estudiantes los usaron en toda la disciplina de anatomía (especialmente en la víspera de las evaluaciones) a pesar de que no era una actividad obligatoria. Esta metodología puede ser una estrategia efectiva en educación de salud híbrida para motivar a los estudiantes en el estudio extra-clase.O ensino moderno de Anatomia permite a utilização de ferramentas tecnológicas que inovam a forma de aprender o corpo humano. O objetivo deste trabalho foi relatar a experiência de utilizar jogos digitais como material complementar no ensino de anatomia humana no curso de odontologia e analisar como o site contendo esses jogos foi acessado durante um semestre acadêmico. O endereço eletrônico foi disponibilizado como um recurso extra (não obrigatório) para o estudo dos assuntos discutidos nas aulas tradicionais de Anatomia. No site, o aluno podia encontrar links para os jogos sobre diferentes conteúdos, com acesso anônimo. Os dados coletados pelo Google Analytics mostraram a visualização de páginas de acordo com o assunto abordado e o número de visualizações de página por dia. Durante o semestre acadêmico, o maior número de visualizações correspondeu exatamente aos assuntos abordados pelo cronograma e o “pico” de visualizações sempre ocorreu antes das avaliações da disciplina. Concluiu-se que os jogos foram ferramentas de ensino atrativas e os alunos os utilizaram ao longo da disciplina de anatomia (especialmente na véspera das avaliações) mesmo não sendo uma atividade mandatória.
