Consequences of food supplementation with whey protein for physical exercise practitioners: an integrative review

Resumo: | Food supplements are conceptualized with substances added to the diet, with the aim of complementing, supplying nutritional deficiencies or even to improve physical performance. Whey protein is the popular term for a dietary supplement based on whey protein. The aim of this study was to review the main consequences associated with dietary supplementation with whey protein. The methodology consists of an integrative literature review, being an exploratory bibliographic research with a qualitative and descriptive approach. The initial sample contained 130 articles, which were submitted to the inclusion and exclusion criteria, at the end 6 articles were selected to compose the discussion. Through the reviewed studies, it was possible to conclude that nutritional supplementation with whey protein brings benefits, helping to maintain lean mass, increase body strength and especially in post-exercise muscle recovery. However, the big problem is the indiscriminate consumption and without professional guidance, excessive supplementation with whey protein can cause liver and kidney damage, compromising the health of the individual. In this context, it is important to consult a qualified professional to carry out the indication of the product and the appropriate amount for each individual. |

La proteína de suero es el término popular para un suplemento dietético basado en proteína de suero. El objetivo de este estudio fue revisar las principales consecuencias asociadas a la suplementación dietética con proteína de suero. La metodología consiste en una revisión integrativa de la literatura, siendo una investigación bibliográfica exploratoria con enfoque cualitativo y descriptivo. La muestra inicial contenía 130 artículos, que fueron sometidos a los criterios de inclusión y exclusión, al final fueron seleccionados 6 artículos para componer la discusión. A través de los estudios revisados, se pudo concluir que la suplementación nutricional con proteína de suero trae beneficios, ayudando a mantener la masa magra, aumentar la fuerza corporal y sobre todo en la recuperación muscular post-ejercicio. Sin embargo, el gran problema es el consumo indiscriminado y sin orientación profesional, la suplementación excesiva con proteína de suero puede causar daño hepático y renal, comprometiendo la salud del individuo. En este contexto, es importante consultar a un profesional calificado para realizar la indicación del producto y la cantidad adecuada para cada individuo.Os suplementos alimentares são conceituados com substâncias adicionadas à dieta, com o objetivo de complementar, suprir carências nutricionais ou ainda para melhorar o desempenho físico. O whey protein é o termo popular para o suplemento alimentar a base de proteínas do soro do leite. O objetivo deste estudo foi revisar as principais consequências associadas a suplementação alimentar com whey protein. A metodologia consiste numa revisão integrativa da literatura, sendo uma pesquisa bibliográfica exploratória com abordagem qualitativa e descritiva. A amostra inicial continha 130 artigos, dos quais foram submetidos aos critérios de inclusão e exclusão, ao final 6 artigos foram selecionados para compor a discussão. Através dos estudos revisados foi possível concluir que a suplementação nutricional com whey protein traz benefícios, auxiliando na manutenção da massa magra, aumento da força corporal e sobretudo na recuperação muscular pós exercício. No entanto, a grande problemática consiste no consumo indiscriminado e sem orientação profissional, a suplementação excessiva com whey protein pode trazer danos hepáticos e renais, comprometendo a saúde do indivíduo.
