Evaluation of academic level of scientific literacy of freshmen and seniors of graduate courses

Resumo: We present the results of a quantitative research that aimed to infer and compare the level of Scientific Literacy of 194 1undergraduate and senior students in undergraduate courses at a University in the interior of Rio Grande do Sul, Brazil. The justification for the study involves the desire to know the impact of academic experience on the scientific education of future teachers who are in the process of initial training. For this, a reduced version of the Test of Basic Scientific Literacy (TBSL) was used. Specifically, this research sought to infer the understanding of undergraduates in the three dimensions of Scientific Literacy postulated by the theoretical framework: understanding the contents of science, the nature of science and the impact of science on society and the environment. As results, it was observed that there are differences in the average of correct answers between entering and concluding courses studied. However, these differences could not be considered statistically significant. These findings are in line with the results described by the literature when investigating chemistry and biology courses from this perspective. It is recommended that other studies be conducted replicating the methodology used, in order to provide support to compare the data and conclusions obtained from the different courses of initial teacher training.

La justificación del estudio implica el deseo de conocer el impacto de la experiencia académica en la educación científica de los futuros profesores que están en el proceso de formación inicial. Para ello, se utilizó una versión reducida del Test de Alfabetización Científica Básica (TACB). Específicamente, esta investigación buscó inferir la comprensión de los estudiantes universitarios en las tres dimensiones de la Alfabetización Científica postuladas por el marco teórico: la comprensión de los contenidos de la ciencia, la naturaleza de la ciencia y el impacto de la ciencia en la sociedad y el medio ambiente. Como resultado, se observó que hay diferencias en el promedio de respuestas correctas entre los cursos de entrada y conclusión estudiados. Sin embargo, estas diferencias no podían considerarse estadísticamente significativas. Estos hallazgos están en línea con los resultados descritos por la literatura al investigar cursos de química y biología desde esta perspectiva. Se recomienda que se realicen otros estudios replicando la metodología utilizada, con el fin de proporcionar apoyo para comparar los datos y conclusiones obtenidos de los diferentes cursos de formación inicial del profesorado.Apresentamos os resultados de uma pesquisa quantitativa que visou inferir e comparar o nível de Alfabetização Científica de 194 acadêmicos ingressantes e concluintes em cursos de licenciaturas de uma Universidade do interior do Rio Grande do Sul, no Brasil. A justificativa para o estudo envolve o anseio de conhecer o impacto da vivência acadêmica na formação científica de futuros professores que estão no processo de formação inicial. Para isso, utilizou-se uma versão reduzida do Teste de Alfabetização Científica Básica (TACB). De maneira específica, essa investigação buscou inferir o entendimento de licenciandos nas três dimensões da Alfabetização Científica postuladas pelo referencial teórico: entendimento dos conteúdos da ciência, da natureza da ciência e do impacto da ciência na sociedade e ambiente. Como resultados, observou-se que há diferenças na média de acertos entre ingressantes e concluintes dos cursos estudados. No entanto, essas diferenças não puderam ser consideradas significativas estatisticamente. Tais constatações vão de encontro aos resultados descritos pela literatura ao investigar sob esta perspectiva os cursos de Química e Biologia.
