The use of starch as a proposal for biodegradable packaging – A review

Resumo: | Despite plastic packaging being part of human life, much has been said about alternatives to replace the production of those that come from oil. As an exciting strategy, starch, especially cassava starch, stands out as a biodegradable source, which, when compared to the material of fossil origin, has high biodegradability and advantages through use. Many studies have already demonstrated some advantages and limitations of this raw material, however, more information on the subject becomes relevant since Brazil is a major producer of starch and the production of renewable packaging is of global interest. Thus, the objective of this narrative literature review was to address biodegradable packaging as a promising alternative to contain the unbridled advance of non-degradable waste production, demonstrating different applications of edible films and coatings of a biodegradable character based on cassava starch. In this context, several current findings were included in this review to expose the concept of biodegradable packaging, in addition to demonstrating that the biodegradability of packaging can be affected by the characteristics of the polymer used, and in this sense, starch showed a shorter degradation time than others. polymeric materials and advantages for their use in packaging. Thus, this review can serve for a wide range of opportunities to know cassava starch as a biopolymer available to be used on an industrial scale, thus ensuring greater biodegradability of materials from this polymer matrix and consequently less damage to the environment. |

Como estrategia interesante, el almidón, especialmente el almidón de yuca, se destaca como una fuente biodegradable, que en comparación con el material de origen fósil, tiene alta biodegradabilidad y ventajas a través del uso. Muchos estudios ya han demostrado algunas ventajas y limitaciones de esta materia prima, sin embargo, más información sobre el tema se vuelve relevante ya que Brasil es un importante productor de almidón y la producción de envases renovables es de interés mundial. Así, el objetivo de esta revisión bibliográfica narrativa fue abordar los envases biodegradables como una alternativa promisoria para contener el avance desenfrenado de la producción de residuos no degradables, demostrando diferentes aplicaciones de películas y recubrimientos comestibles de carácter biodegradable a base de almidón de yuca. En este contexto, en esta revisión se incluyeron varios hallazgos actuales para exponer el concepto de empaque biodegradable, además de demostrar que la biodegradabilidad de un empaque puede verse afectada por las características del polímero utilizado, y en ese sentido, el almidón mostró un menor tiempo de exposición. tiempo de degradación que otros materiales poliméricos y ventajas para su uso en envases. Por lo tanto, esta revisión puede servir para una amplia gama de oportunidades para conocer el almidón de yuca como un biopolímero disponible para ser utilizado a escala industrial, asegurando así una mayor biodegradabilidad de los materiales de esta matriz polimérica y, en consecuencia, un menor daño al medio ambiente.Apesar das embalagens plásticas serem parte da vida do homem, muito tem-se falado em alternativas para substituir a produção das que são provenientes do petróleo. Como estratégia interessante, o amido, em especial, o de mandioca se destaca como fonte biodegradável, que quando comparado com o material de origem fóssil apresenta alta biodegradabilidade e vantagens mediante ao uso. Muitos estudos já demonstraram algumas vantagens e limitações desta matéria-prima, contudo, mais informações acerca do tema se torna relevante uma vez que, o Brasil é um grande produtor de amido e a produção de embalagens renováveis é de interesse mundial. Assim, o objetivo desta revisão bibliográfica narrativa foi abordar sobre as embalagens biodegradáveis como alternativa promissora para conter o avanço desenfreado da produção de lixo não degradável, demonstrando diferentes aplicações de filmes e revestimentos comestíveis de caráter biodegradável à base de amido de mandioca. Nesse contexto, diversos achados atuais foram inseridos nesta revisão para expor o conceito das embalagens biodegradáveis, além de demonstrar que a biodegradabilidade de uma embalagem pode ser afetada pelas características do polímero utilizado, e nesse sentido o amido demonstrou um tempo de degradação menor do que outros materiais poliméricos e vantagens para seu uso em embalagens.
