Practical classes as a teaching strategy for topics in plant biology for high school students: a case study with beans and corn

Resumo: The use of practical classes has great potential helping us in the teaching and learning process in plant biology content, in addition to providing the student with a leading role through active methodologies. In order to signify learning for this content, five practical classes were applied to a total of 38 students, from two different classes of the second year of high school in the public network of Paraíba. Questionnaires, participant observation and notes made by students during the practical classes were used for data collection. During the interventions, it was observed the student protagonism reflected in the active participation during the conduction of the practical classes. In the analysis of the tests, the progression of knowledge learned at the end of the interventions was noticeable. The students, when willing to participate, showed great protagonism during the execution of the activities, which contributed to an active and lasting learning proven through diagnostic evaluation and concept maps. Thus, it is expected that the stimulus to practical activities will positively interfere with learning, even for other subjects.

Thus, it is expected that the stimulus to practical activities will positively interfere with learning, even for other subjects.El uso de clases prácticas tiene un gran potencial ayudándonos en el proceso de enseñanza-aprendizaje en contenidos de biología vegetal, además de dotar al alumno de un protagonismo a través de metodologías activas. Para significar el aprendizaje de este contenido, se aplicaron cinco clases prácticas a un total de 38 estudiantes, de dos clases diferentes del segundo año de la escuela secundaria en la red pública de Paraíba. Para la recolección de datos se utilizaron cuestionarios, observación participante y notas realizadas por los estudiantes durante las clases prácticas. Durante las intervenciones se observó el protagonismo de los estudiantes reflejado en la participación activa durante la conducción de las clases prácticas. En el análisis de las pruebas, se notó la progresión de los conocimientos aprendidos al final de las intervenciones. Los estudiantes, al querer participar, mostraron gran protagonismo durante la ejecución de las actividades, lo que contribuyó a un aprendizaje activo y duradero comprobado a través de evaluación diagnóstica y mapas conceptuales. Así, se espera que el estímulo a las actividades prácticas interfiera positivamente en el aprendizaje, incluso para otras materias.A utilização de aulas práticas apresenta grande potencial nos auxiliando no processo de ensino e aprendizagem em conteúdo de biologia vegetal, além de proporcionar ao estudante um protagonismo através de metodologias ativas. Com o objetivo de significar a aprendizagem para esse conteúdo foram aplicadas cinco aulas práticas para um total de 38 estudantes, de duas turmas diferentes do segundo ano do ensino médio da rede pública da Paraíba. Para a coleta de dados foram aplicados questionários, observação participante e aproveitadas anotações realizadas pelos estudantes durante a realização das aulas práticas. Durante as intervenções, observou-se o protagonismo estudantil refletidos nas participações ativas durante a condução das aulas práticas. Na análise dos testes foi perceptível a progressão de conhecimento apreendido ao final das intervenções. Os alunos, quando dispostos a participar, demonstraram grande protagonismo durante a execução das atividades, o que contribuiu para uma aprendizagem ativa e duradoura comprovada por meio de avaliação diagnóstica e mapas de conceito.
