Resumo: | Objectives: to recognize the difficulties of leadership practices highlighted by nurse managers in the hospital environment of the public service. Method: this is an exploratory, descriptive research, with a qualitative approach and of an applied nature. Five nurse managers participated in a public hospital in the Metropolitan Region of São Paulo, being interviewed individually in July 2021, after signing the Consent Form. Results and discussion: the coordinating nurses pointed out the existence of a fragility in the competences related to the confrontation of conflicts, evaluation and safety in the application of sanctions to the assistant nurses' subordinates. Conclusion: it is concluded that there is a need to develop the leadership skills of nurses in public hospitals, which will have an impact on the good progress of the teams and consequent improvement in the quality of care. |

Resultados y discusión: las enfermeras coordinadoras señalaron la existencia de fragilidad en las competencias relacionadas con el enfrentamiento de conflictos, evaluación y seguridad en la aplicación de sanciones a los subordinados de las auxiliares de enfermería. Conclusión: se concluye que existe la necesidad de desarrollar las habilidades de liderazgo de los enfermeros en los hospitales públicos, lo que repercutirá en la buena marcha de los equipos y la consecuente mejora en la calidad de la atención.Objetivos: reconhecer as dificuldades das práticas de liderança destacadas pelos enfermeiros gestores no âmbito hospitalar do serviço público. Método: trata-se de uma pesquisa exploratória, descritiva, com abordagem qualitativa e de natureza aplicada. Participaram cinco enfermeiros gestores em um hospital público da Região Metropolitana de São Paulo, sendo entrevistados individualmente em julho de 2021, após assinatura do Termo de Consentimento. Resultados e discussão: os enfermeiros coordenadores apontaram a existência de fragilidade nas competências relacionadas ao enfrentamento de conflitos, avaliação e segurança na aplicação de sanções aos liderados dos enfermeiros assistenciais.
