Bilingual education of the Deaf: a view at reading and writing from an RSL

Resumo: This study of qualitative nature consists of a bibliographic research based on a Systematic Literature Review (SLR). Its purpose is to analyze how studies published in Brazil in the period within 2010 and the first quarter of 2022 discuss reading and writing acquisition by deaf children. The analysis is supported by a theoretical framework focusing on the education of the deaf, sign language and bilingual education. It covers a total of 47 scientific papers published in national journals and available in SCIELO and CAPES databases on the period mentioned previously. The study intends to answer the following questions, “How is bilingual education of the deaf being understood in Brazil?” and “What is the role of Brazilian Sign Language (Libras) in the literacy process of deaf children?”. It was possible to identify four conceptions of bilingual education, in addition to different compositions of the teaching staff and different possibilities for the bilingual and the inclusive schools. It was also possible to notice that the studies analyzed have something in common: the importance attributed to Libras and how that is articulated in the second language acquisition process for the deaf. The authors of this study point out the need to promote more discussions about the education for the deaf and that this topic should be disseminated and studied more, not only by deaf people or those who work with the deaf, but involving other professionals who contribute and work in education.

Tiene por objetivo analizar como los estudios publicados en Brasil en el período entre 2010 y el primer trimestre de 2022 discuten la adquisición da la lectura y la escrita por los niños sordos.  El análisis busca soporte en un cuadro teórico con foco en educación de sordos, lengua de señas y educación bilingüe e incluye un total de 47 artículos científicos publicados en periódicos nacionales y disponibles en bases de dados SCIELO y CAPES en el período mencionado. El estudio se propone responder las preguntas “¿Cómo la educación bilingüe para sordos está siendo entendida en Brasil?”  y “¿Cuál es el papel de la Lengua Brasileña de Señas (Libras) en el proceso de alfabetización de niños sordos?”. Fue posible identificar cuatro concepciones de educación bilingüe, además de diferentes composiciones para el cuerpo docente y diferentes posibilidades para la escuela bilingüe y la escuela inclusiva.  Se nota también que los estudios analizados presentan un punto en común que es la importancia asignada a la Libras y como eso se articula en el proceso de adquisición de una segunda lengua para los sordos. Las autoras de este trabajo destacan la necesidad de discutir más la educación para sordos y que eso sea más difundido y estudiado, no solo por personas sordas o que trabajan con sordos, sino que envuelva otros profesionales que contribuyen y actúan en la educación.Este estudo, de natureza qualitativa, consiste em uma pesquisa de cunho bibliográfico, a partir da Revisão Sistemática de Literatura (RSL). Tem por objetivo analisar como os estudos publicados no Brasil no período compreendido entre 2010 e o primeiro trimestre de 2022 discutem a aquisição da leitura e escrita pela criança surda.  A análise busca suporte em um quadro teórico com foco em educação de surdos, língua de sinais e educação bilíngue e abrange um total de 47 artigos científicos publicados em periódicos nacionais e disponíveis nas bases de dados SCIELO e CAPES no período mencionado. O estudo se propõe a responder às perguntas “Como a educação bilíngue para surdos está sendo entendida no Brasil?” e “Qual o papel da Língua Brasileira de Sinais (Libras) no processo de alfabetização da criança surda?”. Foi possível identificar quatro concepções de educação bilíngue, além de diferentes composições para o corpo docente e diferentes possibilidades para a escola bilíngue e escola inclusiva.  Percebe-se também que os estudos analisados apresentam um ponto em comum que é a importância atribuída à Libras e como isso se articula no processo de aquisição de uma segunda língua para os surdos.
