Creation and use of didactic materials to teach the ABO blood system

Resumo: Genetics has been the subject of great scientific and technological advances. However, the textbooks used High School hinder understanding, and does not instigate the critical and reflexive view of the students. The compatibility of the ABO system, determined by the blood groups inherited by the individuals, is an important topic in teaching, because in blood transfusion we need to avoid incompatibility that brings drastic consequences to the health. The aim was creating original low-cost didactic materials to teach about the ABO system and evaluate the student interest on topic, and the teacher’s opinion about the use of the didactic material. For this, teaching materials were prepared in the extension project “Popularizing Genetics” and evaluated in two consecutive years. In the first year, a visual assessment of students' interest and attention was performed during the presentation of the ABO blood system topic using a “test” didactic model. In the second year, the model was improved, and two other high schools were tested using the case study model with assessments carried out through questionnaires for teachers and students. Statistical tests indicated positive results to improve interest and understanding of the ABO system. However, the teachers' opinion was controversial.

Sin embargo, los libros de texto que se usan en la escuela secundaria dificultan la comprensión y no provocan una opinión crítica y reflexiva de los estudiantes. La compatibilidad del sistema ABO, determinada por los grupos sanguíneos heredados por el individuo, es un tema importante en la educación, pues en la transfusión se debe evitar la incompatibilidad que genera consecuencias drásticas para la salud. El objetivo fue producir material didáctico de bajo costo para la enseñanza del sistema ABO, evaluar el interés de los estudiantes por el tema y la opinión de los docentes sobre el uso del material didáctico. Para ello, se prepararon materiales didácticos en el proyecto de extensión “Popularizando la Genética” y se evaluaron en dos años consecutivos. En el primer año, se realizó una evaluación visual del interés y atención de los estudiantes durante la presentación del tema del sistema sanguíneo ABO utilizando un modelo didáctico de “prueba”. En el segundo año, se mejoró el modelo y se probaron otras dos escuelas secundarias utilizando el modelo de estudio de caso con evaluaciones realizadas a través de cuestionarios para maestros y estudiantes. Las pruebas estadísticas indicaron resultados positivos para mejorar el interés y la comprensión del sistema ABO. Sin embargo, la opinión de los profesores fue controvertida.A genética tem sido alvo de grandes avanços científicos e tecnológicos. Entretanto, os livros texto utilizados no Ensino Médio dificultam a compreensão e não instigam a opinião crítica e reflexiva dos alunos. A compatibilidade do sistema ABO, determinada pelos grupos sanguíneos herdados pelo indivíduo, é tópico importante no ensino, pois na transfusão deve-se evitar a incompatibilidade que gera consequências drásticas à saúde. O objetivo foi produzir material didático de baixo custo para ensino do sistema ABO, avaliar o interesse dos alunos sobre o tópico e, a opinião dos professores sobre o uso do material didático. Para tanto, foram confeccionados materiais didáticos no projeto de extensão “Popularizando a Genética” e avaliados, em dois anos consecutivos. No primeiro ano foi realizada uma avaliação visual do interesse e atenção dos alunos durante a apresentação do tema sistema sanguíneo ABO utilizando um modelo didático “teste”. No segundo ano, o modelo foi aprimorado e testado duas outras escolas de Ensino Médio utilizando o modelo estudo de caso com avaliações feitas através de questionários para professores e a alunos. Os testes estatísticos indicaram resultados positivos na melhoria do interesse e na compreensão do sistema ABO.
