Resumo: | This theoretical essay aimed to discuss the literacy process based on the concept of liberating education of the renowned educator Paulo Freire, with a view to elucidating the important role of the school in the formation of the conscious subject, since, according to his conception, literacy and awareness are not separate. This is a study in the form of a theoretical essay. Literacy deserves to be highlighted, as it is the initial field of Freire's work, and also, because it is a theme that instigates several reflections in Brazil, a country with a high number of illiterate youth and adults. In this sense, actions aimed at the literacy of these young people and adults, more than a social and political issue, are historical and cultural. The relevance and timeliness of Paulo Freire's philosophy has been present at all levels of education since its inception, so that throughout the text some terms have been improved, as well as research data cited have been updated. |

Este es un estudio en forma de ensayo teórico. La alfabetización merece ser destacada, ya que es el campo inicial del trabajo de Freire, y también, porque es un tema que instiga varias reflexiones en Brasil, un país con un alto número de jóvenes y adultos analfabetos. En este sentido, las acciones dirigidas a la alfabetización de estos jóvenes y adultos, más que una cuestión social y política, son históricas y culturales. La pertinencia y actualidad de la filosofía de Paulo Freire ha estado presente en todos los niveles de la educación desde sus inicios, por lo que a lo largo del texto se han mejorado algunos términos, así como se han actualizado los datos de investigación citados.Com este ensaio teórico objetivou-se discutir acerca do processo de alfabetização a partir da concepção de educação libertadora do reconhecido educador Paulo Freire, com vista a elucidar o importante papel da escola para a formação do sujeito consciente, uma vez que, segundo a sua concepção, alfabetização e consciência não se separam. Trata-se de estudo no formato de ensaio teórico. A alfabetização merece destaque, por ser o campo inicial do trabalho de Freire, e ainda, por ser um tema que instiga diversas reflexões no Brasil, um país com alto número de jovens e adultos analfabetos. Neste sentido, ações direcionadas para a alfabetização desses jovens e adultos, mais que uma questão social e política é histórica e cultural.
