Resumo: In 1791 was born in Recife the priest Miguel do Sacramento Lopes Gama, author of many books and political panflets, besides almost twelve journals published between 1822 and 1852 in Pernambuco and Rio de Janeiro. This article deals with, in the first place, the way he used the semantic as a rethorical resourse. Secondly, it intends to underline the change of his ideas in the context of the constitucional reform in the regencial period.

O presente artigo visa realçar, em primeiro lugar, o emprego pelo redator da semântica histórica como recurso retórico, tendo em vista refutar o ideário republicano.
