Profile and professional development of tennis coaches

Resumo: Objective: to describe the profile of coaches who work with sportive initiation in tennis. Methods: sixty coaches (35.8±9.1 years) from 14 clubs of five Brazilian states. Coaches filled in a form containing sociodemographic variables and an adapted version of QUAFIPETAR questionnaire. For the data analysis, frequency calculations, descriptive statistics of central tendency, dispersion and distribution were performed. Results: the results showed that, in general, the coaches were characterized by: acting for five years or more in the sports initiation program; having an active professional career for at least 10 years; presenting a game level compatible with 1st or 2nd class players of the respective state federation; having a Physical Education degree; and being frequently engaged in coaching education activities/courses, especially in the federative bias. The pre-professional socialization with the modality occurred in the function of ball boys. Conclusion: this fact associated to the absence of the tennis course in Physical Education School reported by coaches reinforces the need of a better approach between the sport tennis and University environment and the increase of better coaching education programs focusing the sport participation context.

Métodos: participaram 60 treinadores (35,8±9,1 anos) de 14 clubes, de cinco estados brasileiros. Esses profissionais responderam uma ficha contendo as variáveis sociodemográficas e uma versão adaptada do questionário QUAFIPETAR. Para a análise dos dados foram realizados cálculos de frequências, estatísticas descritivas de tendência central, dispersão e distribuição. Resultados: os resultados demonstraram que, de modo geral, os treinadores caracterizaram-se por: atuar há cinco anos ou mais no programa de iniciação esportiva; estar em atividade há mais de 10 anos na carreira profissional; apresentar nível de jogo compatível com a 1ª ou 2ª classes, pela respectiva federação estadual; ser graduado em Educação Física; e envolver-se, com frequência, em atividades/cursos de formação continuada, especialmente pela via federativa. A socialização pré-profissional com a modalidade ocorreu na função de pegadores de bolas. Esse fato, associado à ausência da disciplina tênis na formação inicial dos treinadores envolvidos, reforça a necessidade de aproximação da modalidade com o meio acadêmico.
