The influence of central and secondary underlining in the elaboration of informative summaries

Resumo: | This paper investigates the influence of the addition of underlining to copies of four articles of Ciência Hoje, for the elaboration of twenty informative summaries produced by five Pedagogy students. The results demonstrated that: a) the percentage of the use of underlined sentences was higher than that for the use of non-underlined sentences; b) the percentage of the use of underlined central sentences was higher than that for the use of underlined secondary sentences; c) the summaries relied predominantly on the strategies of full or partial copying and simple paraphrasing; and, d) the summaries were influenced by the form of the underlining (integral, clausal and lexical). Finally, this paper discusses some implications for researching and teaching with the help of school summaries. |

En este artículo, se verifica la influencia de la aposición de subrayados en copias de cuatro artículos de Ciência Hoje para la elaboración de veinte resúmenes informativos producidos por cinco estudiantes de Pedagogía. Los resultados demostraron eso: a) el percentil de uso de las frases subrayadas superó el uso de las frases no-subrayadas; b) el percentil de uso de las frases centrales subrayadas superó el uso de las frases periféricas subrayadas; c) los resúmenes fueron escritos predominantemente por estrategias de la copia acrescida o no de borrado(s) y de paraphrase(s) simples; y, d) los resúmenes fueron influenciados por la forma de los subrayados (íntegro, clausal y lexical). El artículo, finalmente, discute algunas implicaciones de los resultados para la investigación y la enseñanza con resúmenes escolares. Dans cet article, on met en relief l’influence de l’apposition de sous-lignes dans les copies de quatre articles de la revue Ciência Hoje pour l’élaboration de vingt résumés instructifs produits par cinq étudiants en Pédagogie. Les résultats ont démontré cela: a) le pourcentage d’usage des phrases soulignées a excédé celui d’usage des phrases non-soulignées; b) le pourcentage d’usage des phrases centrales soulignées a excédé celui d’usage des phrases périphériques soulignées; c) les résumés ont été écrits surtout au moyen de la stratégie de copie (plus effacement(s) et paraphrase(s) simple(s)); et, d) les résumés ont été influencés par la forme de l’élément souligné (intégrant, clausal et lexical). On discute, finalement, quelques implications des résultats pour la recherche et l’enseignement ayant recours aux résumés scolaires.Neste artigo, verifica-se a influência da aposição de sublinhas em cópias de quatro artigos de Ciência Hoje na elaboração de vinte resumos informativos produzidos por cinco estudantes de Pedagogia. Os resultados demonstraram que: a) o percentual de utilização das sentenças sublinhadas superou o de utilização das sentenças não-sublinhadas; b) o percentual de utilização das sentenças centrais sublinhadas superou o de utilização das sentenças periféricas sublinhadas; c) os resumos foram escritos predominantemente por estratégias de cópia acrescida ou não de apagamento(s) e paráfrase(s) simples; e, d) os resumos foram influenciados pela forma do sublinhado (integral, clausal e lexical).
