Cognitive effort and contextual effect in translation: Relevance in the performance of novice and expert translators

Resumo: This article investigates the relationship between cognitive effort and contextual effect postulated by Relevance Theory when applied to the study of the translation process. To do so, it analyses the performance of novice and expert translators in the language pairs English-Portuguese and English-Spanish. The data analysis attests the appropriateness of Gutt’s proposal to redefine the notion of effort in the presuppositions of relevance and provides evidence that the relationship between effort and effect in translation is mediated by the meta-representation that the translator has of both source and target texts.

Por lo tanto, analiza el modo cómo se desempeñan en el proceso de traducción los traductores novatos y expertos en los pares lingüísticos inglés-portugués e inglés-español. El análisis de los datos demuestra la pertinencia de la propuesta de Gutt (1998) cual sea la de redefinir la noción de esfuerzo en la conceptuación de relevancia y pone en evidencia que la relación esfuerzo / efecto en traducción está mediada por la meta-representación que tiene el traductor respecto a los textos de partida y de llegada.Cet article recherche le rapport entre l’effort cognitif et l’ effet contextuel postulé par la théorie de la pertinence, quand celle-ci est employée dans l’étude du procès de traduction. Ayant cet obectif, on analyse la réalisation du procès employé par les traducteurs jeunes et vifs dans les paires linguistiques anglais-portugais et anglais-espagnol. L’analyse des données démontre la pertinence de la proposition de Gutt (1998) dont la redéfinition de la notion effort/effet en traduction qui est moyennée par la méta-représentation qui se fait le traducteur entre les textes de départ et d’arrivé.Este artigo investiga a relação entre esforço cognitivo e efeito contextual postulada pela Teoria da Relevância quando aplicada ao estudo do processo de tradução. Para tanto, analisa o desempenho processual de tradutores novatos e expertos nos pares lingüísticos inglês-português e inglês-espanhol.
