Leadership in Sport: A Study of Athletes and Coaches Perception in the Competitive Context

Resumo: | This study aimed to analyze the leadership style of sporting coaches from adult and youthful categories. It was part of the study 238 subjects. As measure instrument, it was used the Sport Leadership Scale (SLS). For data analysis, it was adopted the descriptive statistic and the Mann-Whitney test. The results have indicated that the predominating leadership style, in the perception of coaches and athletes, was the training-instruction and the reinforcement, for both categories. The reinforcement dimension was more evidenced in the youthful category. For the female gender, the social support was more significant, while, for male gender, the autocratic behavior was more relevant. So it was possible to conclude that the leadership style was similar for both athletes’ and coaches’ perception. However, when one analyzed the coaches’ style for identifying which was the most preferred by the athletes, the higher preference was for coaches who worry about the athletes, who provide more positive feedback and who have a more democratic than autocratic style. |

Formaron parte del estudio 238 sujetos. Fue usado como instrumento de medida la Escala de Liderazgo en el Deporte (ELD). Para el análisis de los datos se optó por la estadística descriptiva y por el test Mann-Whitney. Los resultados indicaron que en la percepción de técnicos y atletas el estilo de liderazgo predominante fue el de entrenamiento instrucción y refuerzo en las dos categorías. La dimensión refuerzo fue la más evidenciada en la categoría juvenil. Para el género femenino, el apoyo social fue más significativa y para el género masculino la más relevante fue el comportamiento autocrático. Así fue posible concluir que el estilo de liderazgo, tanto en la percepción de los atletas, como en la de los técnicos fue semejante. Sin embargo cuando se analizó el estilo de los técnicos con el propósito de identificar cual era el preferido por los atletas, la preferencia mayor fue por técnicos que se preocupan con los atletas que ofrecen más feedback positivo y que tienen estilo más democrático que autocrático.Este estudo teve como objetivo analisar o estilo de liderança de técnicos esportivos das categorias adulta e juvenil. Fizeram parte do estudo 238 sujeitos. Como instrumento de medida, utilizou-se a Escala de Liderança no Esporte (ELD). Para análise dos dados, optou-se pela estatística descritiva e pelo teste Mann-Whitney. Os resultados indicaram que o estilo de liderança predominante, na percepção de técnicos e atletas, foi o de treino-instrução e reforço, em ambas as categorias. A dimensão reforço foi mais evidenciada na categoria juvenil. Para o gênero feminino, o apoio social foi mais significativo, enquanto para o gênero masculino, foi mais relevante o comportamento autocrático. Assim, concluiu-se que o estilo de liderança, tanto na percepção dos atletas como na dos técnicos, foi semelhante.
