Resumo: Introduction: Chronic diseases have multiple impacts in terms of limitation of quality of life. Diabetes mellitus represents a public health problem due to its increased incidence, prevalence and considerable economic charge for individuals and society. Objectives: Verify the presence of metabolic syndrome and describe the quality of life of diabetics subscribed to a health center located in the Brazilian town of Alfenas, southern of Minas Gerais state. Methods: Study conducted with 67 adults patients with diabetes mellitus. The data collection was made by a semi-structured questionnaire and by The Medical Outcomes Study 36-Item Short-Form Health Survey (SF-36). To diagnose metabolic syndrome, in addition to the presence of diabetes mellitus disease, was used as criteria the increased waist circumference and arterial hypertension diagnosed. The statistical analysis was performed by the Statistical Package for Social Sciences software (SPSS) 22.0. Results: From the total sample patients, 59.7% were women. The sedentary lifestyle was identified in 67.2% of them, and 58.2% of the patients had arterial hypertension. The overweight and abdominal adiposity of 80.6% and 89.6%, respectively could been seen among diabetics. Metabolic syndrome was identified in 56.06% of diabetics. The domains with lower quality of life scores were General Health and Vitality. Conclusions: The study allowed the identification of metabolic syndrome in most of the patients. It was observed, in some areas, a low perception of life quality from the population point of view. Thus, it is necessary more attention to the patients to improve their quality of life.
