Reflections on visual language in the process of artifact formgiving

Resumo: This paper presents the academic and professional paths taken by the author, together with the results and reflections concerning the research he carried out. Starting from the studies which began with the Project and Collection “Olhar, Olhares” (“Look, Looks”) in 2002 and continuing until the present moment, other inquiries on the education and role of the designer in society take place; all the stages that led to the SEE BEYOND method (2016), created during his doctorate, are described. This method has also triggered and oriented other views on undergraduate education and product development in the field of fashion, in a dialogue between Design and Neuroscience.

El fragmento que aquí se presenta resal-ta el descompaso entre práctica proyectual y pensamiento visual, en el proceso de configuración de los artefactos materiales tridimensionales, decurrente, prin-cipalmente, de la necesidad del enfoque del contenido del lenguaje visual en el ámbito del diseño de producto. Los estudios sobre el lenguaje visual son adopta-dos como fundamentos básicos para la formación de los diseñadores desde su surgimiento en Bauhaus. A pesar de su importancia y de la constante retomada de ese contenido, se observa que las discusiones ocurren sustancialmente con relación a las ocurrencias bidimensionales. Surge entonces el presupuesto de que la falta de reflexiones acerca de la aplicación de esos conceptos en el diseño tri-dimensional produce impactos en el proceso de incorporación de repertorio vi-sual, así como en la calidad de generación de conceptos formales en la práctica proyectual. El objetivo de este texto es expandir la visión sobre la problemática destacando la relevancia de la ampliación de los debates relativos a esa cues-tión. Los resultados ofrecen, de manera breve, instrumentos que posibilitan com-prender los matices de la composición visual tridimensional.Este artigo apresenta um recorte da pesquisa de doutoramento realizada na Uni-versidade Federal de Pernambuco. O fragmento aqui apresentado ressalta o des-compasso entre prática projetual e pensamento visual no processo de configura-ção dos artefatos materiais tridimensionais decorrentes, principalmente, da ca-rência da abordagem do conteúdo da linguagem visual no âmbito do design de produto. Os estudos sobre linguagem visual são adotados como fundamentos básicos para formação dos designers desde o seu surgimento na Bauhaus. Apesar de sua importância e da constante retomada desse conteúdo, observa-se que as discussões acontecem substancialmente em relação às ocorrências bidimensio-nais. Surge então o pressuposto de que a falta de reflexões sobre a aplicação des-ses conceitos no design tridimensional produz impactos no processo de incorpo-ração de repertório visual e na qualidade da geração de conceitos formais na prá-tica projetual. O objetivo do texto é expandir a visão sobre a problemática desta-cando a relevância da ampliação dos debates relativos à essa questão.
