Brazil in the international tourism literature: analysis of publications in the English language

Resumo: The paper presents an overview of studies on tourism in Brazil published abroad in the English language between 1977 and 2014. Studies published as books, book chapters and scientific papers in journals were selected. The data collection technique used was the search in databases, consulting the curricula of the authors and search tools on the Internet. 149 published papers were identified..In 2012 22 studies were published, resulting in the year with the highest number of publications. Since then, the growing rate of publications has stabilized or even decreased a little. 73% (n=109) of the studies were published in scientific journals, 23% (n =35) in book chapters and 3% (n=5) in book format. Altogether 256 authors have published on the subject, but only 41 of them published at least two studies. The themes of the studies were varied, with the natural environment receiving slightly higher attention. In the word cloud of each work’s abstract the following words are highlighted: development, management, environmental, ecotourism, sustainable, destination and economic.

Se seleccionaron los estudios publicados como libros, capítulos de libros y artículos científicos en revistas. La técnica de recolección de datos mezcló búsqueda en bases de datos, consulta a los curricula de los autores y herramientas de búsqueda en Internet. Se identificaron 149 estudios publicados. En 2012 se publicaron 22 estudios, año con el mayor número de publicaciones. Desde entonces, la tasa de crecimiento del número de publicaciones ha revelado cierta estabilidad o incluso una pequeña reducción. 73% (n=109) de los estudios fueron publicados en revistas científicas, el 23% (n=35) en forma de capítulos de libros y el 3% (n=5) en forma de libro. En total, 256 autores han escrito sobre el tema, pero sólo 41 de ellos publicados por lo menos dos estudios. Los temas tratados fueron mixtos, con el entorno natural recibiendo un poco más de destaque. En la nube de términos de los resúmenes de cada obra fue se destacan las palabras: desarrollo, gestión, ambiental, ecoturismo, sostenible, destino y económico.O trabalho traça um panorama dos estudos sobre o turismo no Brasil publicados no exterior em idioma inglês entre 1977 e 2014. Foram selecionados estudos publicados em forma de livros, capítulos de livros e artigos científicos em periódicos. A técnica de coleta dos dados mesclou pesquisa em bancos de dados, consulta aos currículos dos autores e ferramentas de busca na Internet. Foram identificados 149 trabalhos publicados. Em 2012 foram publicados 22 estudos, sendo aquele o ano com o maior número de publicações. Desde então, a taxa de crescimento do número de publicações tem revelado certa estabilidade ou até uma pequena redução.  73% (n=109) dos trabalhos foram publicados em periódicos científicos, 23% (n=35) em forma de capítulos de livros e 3% (n=5) em forma de livros. Ao todo, 256 autores escreveram sobre o tema, mas somente 41 deles publicaram ao menos dois trabalhos. Os temas abordados nos estudos foram variados, sendo que o meio ambiente natural recebeu ligeiro destaque.
