“Much More than a Game”: Cultural Diversity in Sports Practices for Indigenous Peoples as a Theme for Teaching History

Resumo: In this article, we seek to narrate some experiences about sport and traditional indigenous games as a theme for teaching History in a class of 6th grade of Elementary School at the Colégio de Aplicação of the Federal University of Santa Catarina. The content covered in the classroom was “Indigenous Peoples in Santa Catarina”, using sports competitions held by indigenous peoples and sports in indigenous communities as a way of addressing indigenous culture in contemporary times. The analyzes carried out in activities by the students played an evaluative role and helped in the investigation of the initial question that guided the research: to study the diversity of indigenous peo-ples through knowledge about their sports practices. The search for the answer to this question also involves pro-moting actions to raise students’ awareness of the diversity and richness of indigenous culture, therefore, the central theme of the article.

O conteúdo abordado em sala de aula foi o de “Povos Indígenas em Santa Catarina”, utilizando-se competições esportivas realizadas por povos indígenas e a prática esportiva em comunidades indígenas como forma de abordar a cultura indígena na contemporaneidade. As análises realizadas em atividades pelos alunos desempenharam papel avaliativo e auxiliaram na investigação da questão inicial que orientou a pesquisa: estudar a diversidade dos povos indígenas através do conhecimento sobre as práticas esportivas desses povos.
