Assessment in Education: what could the school do to improve its results?

Resumo: This text discusses, summarizes and poses the problems of the main points debated by four researchers regarding assessments in education. Considering the results of the SAEB 2003, PISA 2003 and INAF 2001, the debaters were invited to reflect on this data, the achievements and challenges, using the theme of what the school could do to improve its performance within assessment systems. In this context, mediator Maria do Carmo Brant de Carvalho questioned the role and relations between school, family, community and education. José Francisco Soares pointed to the importance of the school as a time and space for education, indicating paths for building an educational community.  Naércio Menezes analyzed the results of assessments beyond the classroom, emphasizing the time that students stay in schools. Bernadete Gatti stated that concrete and effective political actions should precede assessment, underscoring the absence of good teacher training courses, of a clearly defined basic national curriculum and of its continued use by public administrations. The debate also promoted a dialogue between the participants and the audience, through questions and answers that encouraged finding solutions.
