Multiculturality and arts education in the early childhood education curriculum

Resumo: This study explores Art Education in Early Childhood Education curricula in ten countries – Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Chile, Colombia, Spain, Guatemala, Mexico, Nicaragua, and the Dominican Republic – from the theories of critical pedagogy and multiculturalism. To this purpose, a qualitative content analysis of the curricula and 25 interviews with experts were carried out. The results indicate that the multicultural approach is generally present in Latin American curricula, but despite this, in many cases it is not transferred to the artistic field. It is proposed to incorporate values in Art Education and to strengthen the concept of hybrid identity; to do so, it is necessary to reinforce teacher training.

Los resultados indican que el enfoque multicultural está presente de manera general en los currículums latinoamericanos, pero, a pesar de ello, en muchos casos no se traslada al campo artístico. Se propone incorporar el trabajo con valores en la educación artística y potenciar el concepto de identidad híbrida y diversa; para ello se identifica la necesidad de reforzar la formación docente inicial y continua.À partir des théories de la pédagogie critique et du multiculturalisme, cette étude examine l’éducation artistique dans les programmes scolaires de la petite enfance de dix pays – l’Argentine, la Bolivie, le Brésil, le Chili, la Colombie, l’Espagne, le Guatemala, le Mexique, le Nicaragua et la République dominicaine. À cette fin, une analyse qualitative des contenus des programmes d’études et de 25 entretiens avec des experts a été réalisée. Les résultats indiquent que l’approche multiculturelle est généralement présente dans les programmes scolaires latino-américains, mais que, dans beaucoup de cas, elle ne s’applique pas au domaine artistique. Un travail sur les valeurs devra donc être intégré à l’éducation artistique, ainsi qu’un renforcement de la notion d’identité hybride et diverse. Pour arriver à cela, il sera nécessaire d’améliorer la formation initiale et continue des enseignants.Este estudo explora a educação artística nos currículos de educação infantil em dez países – Argentina, Bolívia, Brasil, Chile, Colômbia, Espanha, Guatemala, México, Nicarágua e República Dominicana – a partir das teorias da pedagogia crítica e do multiculturalismo.
