Resumo: Records are the most reliable source of evidence, because they are interrelated as to meaning, authentic as to genesis, and impartial as to purpose (i.e. they are not drawn up for the benefit of posterity, but as a means for carrying out affairs). However, in modern times, their increasing volume and the need for drastic selections are obscuring their meaning; records creators have become very much aware of the possible consequences of generating and preserving documentation of their actions; and information technologies have made it far too easy to manipulate and obliterate evidence without leaving any trace of it. It is the primary obligation of modern achivists to protect the integrity, authenticity, and impartiality of contemporary records in the methods used to treat them, so that they will remain reliable historical and legal evidence for generations to come. This paper will discuss the above issues and provide recommendations on the most appropriate ways for achivists to meet their responsability.

Editora FGV1994-07-01info:eu-repo/semantics/articleinfo:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersionapplication/pdfhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/1976Revista Estudos Históricos; Vol. 7 No. 13 (1994): CPDOC 20 years; 49-64Revista Estudos Históricos; v. 7 n. 13 (1994): CPDOC 20 anos; 49-642178-14940103-2186reponame:Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro)instname:Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)instacron:FGVporhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/article/view/1976/2164Duranti, Lucianainfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2017-06-14T21:04:09Zoai:ojs.periodicos.fgv.br:article/1976Revistahttps://periodicos.fgv.br/rehONGhttps://periodicos.fgv.br/reh/oai||biblioteca.digital@fgv.br||eh@fgv.br2178-14940103-2186opendoar:2024-03-06T13:01:28.943601Estudos Históricos (Rio de Janeiro) - Fundação Getulio Vargas (FGV)true
