At the service of Medicine: origins of the subject of Chemistry in the Historical Compendium of the University of Coimbra (1771)

Resumo: This study aims to contribute to the discussion on the origins of the subject of Chemistry and its institutionalization in the educational field. The methodology is based on documentary research. The analytical procedure was carried through content analysis of the Historical Compendium of the University of Coimbra and parameterized by those references that deal with the history of the school subjects. The analyses produced the final categories teaching of Chemistry and contents of Chemistry, made of terms that, both by their definition and through the teaching contents generated throughout history, express characteristics that link the use of Chemistry to the studies of Medicine. Findings show that the Chemistry-related contents found in the Compendium have a seminal character, manifesting aspects of Chemistry’s genesis and implementation as a school subject. The conclusion indicates that the origin of the school subject of Chemistry is justified by its importance for the higher studies of Medicine, which reveal one of the purposes that majorly influenced its institutionalization in the educational field.

La metodología está basada en la investigación documental. El procedimiento analítico fue realizado por medio de análisis de contenido del Compendio Histórico de la Universidade de Coimbra y parametrizado por referencial que trata de la historia de las asignaturas escolares. Los análisis produjeron las categorías finales Enseñanza de la Química y Contenidos de la Química, compuestas por términos que, tanto en su definición como por los contenidos de enseñanza que se generaron a lo largo de la historia, expresan características que vinculan la utilización de la Química a los estudios de la Medicina. Los resultados muestran que los contenidos referentes a la Química identificados en el compendio presentan un carácter seminal, manifestando aspectos de la génesis e implementación de la Química como asignatura escolar. Concluimos que en el origen de la asignatura escolar se encuentra su importancia para los estudios superiores de Medicina, lo que revela una de las finalidades que presidieron su institucionalización en el campo educativo.O estudo objetiva contribuir para a discussão sobre a origem da disciplina de Química e a sua institucionalização no campo educacional. A metodologia está embasada em pesquisa documental. O procedimento analítico foi realizado por meio de análise de conteúdo do Compêndio Histórico da Universidade de Coimbra e parametrizado por referencial que trata da história das disciplinas escolares. As análises produziram as categorias finais ensino da Química e conteúdos da Química, compostas por termos que, tanto em sua definição como pelos conteúdos de ensino que foram gerados ao longo da história, expressam características que vinculam a utilização da Química aos estudos da Medicina. Os resultados mostram que os conteúdos referentes à Química identificados no Compêndio apresentam um caráter seminal, manifestando aspectos da gênese e da implementação da Química como disciplina escolar.
