Resumo: The text discusses the production of school failure and its impacts on higher education courses, specifically in a Chemistry degree course at a federal institution located in the northwest region of the State of Paraná, aiming to contribute to the current debate involving the challenges in training of new students in chemistry degree courses. The research is bibliographic, based on a historical approach. It was found that the process of academic lag in basic education, combined with the psychologizing view of education, in which school failure is the responsibility of the student, as well as the neoliberal educational policies that implemented the so-called pedagogy business impact the educational process in higher education courses. In addition, such courses face new developments in the inclusion process and the advancement of distance education, which contribute to the evasion process. Given the problems presented, we sought to identify possibilities to contain evasion and retention in the chemistry degree course, such as the extension curriculum, inclusion support centers and PIBID.
