Resumo: This article describes and discusses some theoretical and empirical contributions relating to the education of deaf people. It discusses the oralist and total communication philosophy and, related to the last one, the influence of the using gesture in academic performance of deaf scholars. It shows and discusses the results of a pilot study that had as a goal, the evaluation of understanding leveI in reading and the performance in writting. 102 sholars were researched in the reading evaluation and 20 scholars in the writting one. The preliminary results suggest interference of the use of sign language on these processes, subject theat must be more researched in coming works.

Discute a filosofia oralista e da comunicação total e, nesta última, a influência do uso de modalidades gestuais no desempenho acadêmico dos alunos surdos. Apresenta e discute os resultados de um estudo piloto que teve como objetivo a avaliação do nível de compreensão de leitura e a produção da escrita. A amostra estudada foi de 102 alunos na avaliação de leitura e de 10 alunos na da escrita.
