“Português — Universidades”: a Portuguese teaching material for foreigners in the Brazilian university context

Resumo: The teaching of Portuguese for Speakers of Other Languages (PFOL) in Brazil has expanded in universities over recent years, with the increase in the number of international students enrolled in many universities around the country due to the increase in the number of agreements between institutions from many parts of the world. With the growth of foreigners in the Brazilian university environment, not only has the demand for PFOL courses within universities been growing, but also the elaboration of teaching materials that meet the demands of foreigner students in the university context, in order to promote their integration to the university community. With that aim, the need to prepare a teaching material in the university context came out, within the Professional Master’s in Foreign Languages (MEPLEM), at Londrina State University (UEL). From the point of view of the internationalization of the Higher Education, it is intended, in this paper, to present a brief overview of the PFOL teaching within Brazilian universities, as well as the role in integrating and adapting the foreign community in the Brazilian university environment. In addition, it is intended to present and describe this teaching material in university context, in order to elucidate the theoretical principles behind its activities and how they are focused on attending the students’ needs of learning.

Com isso, cresce também a demanda na oferta de cursos de PFOL dentro das universidades e, consequentemente, de cursos e de elaboração de materiais que contemplem as necessidades de uso do português pelos estrangeiros no contexto universitário, de modo a promover sua integração à comunidade acadêmica. Com o intuito de atender a essa demanda, surge, então, uma proposta de elaboração de um Material Didático (MD) em contexto universitário, dentro do programa de Mestrado Profissional em Letras Estrangeiras Modernas (MEPLEM), da Universidade Estadual de Londrina (UEL). Partindo de um contexto de internacionalização do ensino superior, apresentaremos, neste artigo, o cenário do ensino de PFOL dentro das universidades brasileiras, bem como o papel da universidade na integração e na adaptação de alunos estrangeiros à vida acadêmica, de modo a justificar a elaboração do referido MD.
