Dance and national identity in the carioca press of the beginning of the Twentieth century: cultural dialogues and ethnic and gender relations

Resumo: | Based on the analysis of imagery and textual records present in the Rio press, the article analyzes the practices of social dances in the city of Rio de Janeiro, during the first three decades of the twentieth century. Understanding of the body as a space for political realization and an important means of experience and communication with the world, three themes are treated: the attempt of Brazilian intellectuals to define national identity from the analogy between the character of a people and its rhythmic manifestations; the cross-cultural dialogues between rhythms and dances of the Americas, Europe and Africa in the halls and stages of the country’s capital; and, finally, the formulation of different social profiles, more or less transgressors, through the practice of dance. In this context, dance reveals itself as a means of elaboration of ethnic, social and gender identity, being at the same time the target of idealized, racist and moralizing discourses. |

Teniendo como presupuesto el cuerpo como espacio de realización política y un importante medio de experiencia y comunicación con el mundo, se tratan tres temas: el intento de intelectuales brasileños de definir la identidad nacional por medio de la analogía entre el carácter de un pueblo y, sus manifestaciones rítmicas; los diálogos transculturales entre ritmos y danzas de las Américas, Europa y África en los salones y escenarios de la capital del país; y, por fin, la formulación de diferentes perfiles sociales, más o menos transgresores, por medio de la práctica de la danza. En este contexto, la danza se revela como un medio de elaboración de identidad étnica, social y de género, siendo al mismo tiempo la mira de discursos idealizados, racistas y moralizantes.A partir do exame de registros imagéticos e textuais presentes na imprensa carioca, o artigo analisa as práticas de danças sociais na cidade do Rio de Janeiro, durante as três primeiras décadas do século XX. Tendo como pressuposto a compreensão do corpo enquanto espaço de realização política e um importante meio de experiência e comunicação com o mundo, três temas são tratados: a tentativa de intelectuais brasileiros de definirem a identidade nacional por meio da analogia entre o caráter de um povo e as suas manifestações rítmicas; os diálogos transculturais entre ritmos e danças das Américas, da Europa e da África nos salões e palcos da capital do país; e, por fim, a formulação de diferentes perfis sociais, mais ou menos transgressores, por meio da prática da dança.
