This work aims at analyzing how to use movies seen as an instrument in the teaching and learning process of English as a foreign language and its sociocultural and linguistic contributions to the learner´s development and performance. To achieve this goal I will be a teacher/researcher of my own practice in the English classroom for high school students in a public school in the State of Sao Paulo. The research was supported theoretically mainly by Rajagopalan (2004a,2007), Leffa (1988,1999), Moran (19952007) and the National Curriculum Parameters – foreign language (Brazil, 1998). It showed how much the use of movies can enhance the interest of the student in learning English and made clear that teachers can and need to be aware of that, as well as empower themselves in the operation of basic technological resources. According to the results, it was possible to make the classroom more dynamic, to demystify the use of films as sheer entertainment and recognize them as authentic material in the presentation of cultural and sociocultural elements as well as highlighting the linguistic variations of the English language in a contextualized situation
