The clinical supervision success in the transition of the new graduated nurse to professional practice: integrative review of literature

The transition between the academic formation and professional practice has a significant impact on the professional course of the newly graduated nurse, but mostly in the actual background of Nursing practice. The general aim of this integrative review of literature is to “Determine which factors ensure the effectiveness of the clinical supervision in the newly graduated nurse’s transition to the professional practice”. As methodology, the PICO was used to formulate the investigation question: “Which factors determine the effectiveness of clinical supervision in the newly graduated nurse’s transition to the professional practice, based on literature?” The synthesis of scientific knowledge follows the steps proposed by The Joanna Briggs Institute. The analysis of the 14 selected articles gives orientations about the effectiveness of clinical supervision. In the perspective of the newly graduated nurses and their supervisors, the themes were divided in: “Clinical supervision: importance and factors which determine its success”; “the role of the supervising nurse on clinical supervision: ideal profile.”; “limitations in clinical supervision: barriers” and “The effectiveness of clinical supervision: strategies to adapt”. The quality of the clinical supervision is determined by factors that must be considered to ensure its effectiveness. The implementation of effective supervision processes allows to answer the needs of the newly graduated nurses during the transition to professional practice increasing their satisfaction and bond towards the profession. In this way, it is possible to potentiate their professional development, promoting health gains related to safety and quality care.
