The epistolary writing as an object of research: a stuy about the Brazilian princesses’ letters

Resumo: | The present work has as its object the epistolary writing, showing the methodological proceduresrelated to a qualitative research approach, with a historical-documentary focus, in which theresearch does not refer only to the content of the missives analyzed, but also to the evidencedmateriality, examining the value of items such as a writing of the text, a used ink, trademarks found,symbols such as margins, drawings, colors, whitespace, dating, treatments and closures, a sign-inand a post-writing . The main sources of the work are, such as documents, such as letters and ticketsexchanged between the Brazilian imperial family, during the period of education of the Isabel andLeopoldina princesses, from 1854 to 1864, belonging today to different archives and collections,located at the Imperial Museum in Petrópolis / Brazil. The bibliographical reference used dialogueswith authors who make use of methods and techniques applied to the analysis and interpretationof egodocuments, as well as researchers who study letters in their autobiographical possibilities,among them, Flexor; Bastos, Cunha and Mignot; Sierra Blas; French; and Gomes. It is concluded thatthe documents are fundamental for a historical reconstruction, allowing multiple glances about asame period and event, in this case, the process of formation and education of the future heirs ofthe Brazilian throne, as Isabel and Leopoldina princesses. In addition, it can be seen that epistolarywriting allows the historian a better view of the characters he intends to portray, even though it isnot possible to possess definitely his object. |

In addition, it can be seen that epistolarywriting allows the historian a better view of the characters he intends to portray, even though it isnot possible to possess definitely his object.El presente trabajo tiene como objeto la escrita epistolar, presentando los procedimientosmetodológicos relativos a ese abordaje de investigación cualitativa, con enfoque históricodocumental,cuya pesquisa no se refiere solamente al contenido de las misivas analizadas, sinoa la materialidad evidenciada, examinando los papeles a los cuales abarcan los ítems como laescrita de un texto, el tinte usado, las huellas encontradas, los símbolos, los márgenes, los dibujos,los colores, los espacios en blanco, la datación, los tratamientos y cierres, la colocación de lasfirmas y el pos-escrito. Las principales fuentes utilizadas son egodocumentos, como cartas ybilletes, cambiados entre la familia imperial brasileña, durante el periodo de educación de lasprincesas Isabel y Leopoldina, los años de 1854 a 1864, pertenecientes, actualmente, a diferentesarchivos y acervos, ubicados, especialmente, en el Museo Imperial en Petrópolis/Brasil. Elreferencial bibliográfico utilizado platica con autores que usan métodos y técnicas aplicados alanálisis e interpretación de egodocumentos, bien como investigadores que estudian cartas ensus posibilidades autobiográficas, entre ellos, Flexor; Bastos, Cunha y Mignot; Sierra Blas; Francès; yGomes. Se concluye que los egodocumentos son fundamentales para la recomposición histórica,posibilitando múltiples miradas sobre un mismo periodo y suceso, en este caso, el proceso deformación y educación de las futuras soberanas y herederas del trono de Brasil, las princesas Isabely Leopoldina. Además, se constata que la escrita epistolar permite al historiador, aunque no puedadominar totalmente su objeto, una visión más intimista de los personajes que pretende retratar.O presente trabalho tem como objeto a escrita epistolar, apresentando os procedimentosmetodológicos relativos a essa abordagem da pesquisa qualitativa, com enfoque históricodocumental,na qual a investigação não se refere apenas ao conteúdo das missivas analisadas, mastambém à materialidade evidenciada, examinando os papéis no que tange a itens como a escritado texto, a tinta usada, as marcas encontradas, os símbolos, as margens, os desenhos, as cores, osespaços em branco, a datação, os tratamentos e fechamentos, a colocação das assinaturas e o pósescrito.As principais fontes utilizadas são egodocumentos, como cartas e bilhetes, trocados entrea família imperial brasileira, durante o período de educação das princesas Isabel e Leopoldina, osanos de 1854 a 1864, pertencentes, hoje, a diferentes arquivos e acervos, localizados, especialmente,no Museu Imperial em Petrópolis/Brasil. O referencial bibliográfico utilizado dialoga com autoresque fazem uso de métodos e técnicas aplicados à análise e interpretação de egodocumentos,bem como pesquisadores que estudam cartas em suas possibilidades autobiográficas, entre eles,Flexor; Bastos, Cunha e Mignot; Sierra Blas; Francès; e Gomes. Conclui-se que os egodocumentossão fundamentais para a recomposição histórica, possibilitando múltiplos olhares sobre um mesmoperíodo e acontecimento, neste caso, o processo de formação e educação das futuras soberanase herdeiras do trono do Brasil, as princesas Isabel e Leopoldina.
