Resumo: The present study aims to bring a critical approach about school failure and its relationship with medicalization, presenting, at first, an epistemological discussion of the theme, followed by a brief historical perspective of the investigated phenomenon. We also present two field surveys carried out: the first, in 2015, with 14 students of public basic education, implemented through semi-structured interviews; and the second, in 2019, with 13 trainees and 10 graduates from a Pedagogy course at a Federal University, through online questionnaires. We seek to know their perception of school failure, repetition and medicalization, welcoming different views. The results showed that the individualizing/ biologizing/ pathologizing/ medicalizing understanding still predominates as the perception of students (about their own failure) and of teachers / future teachers. We considered these results to be an outcome of an uncritical education and very convenient to capitalist interests. Thus, we understand that the education professionals need not only to perceive themselves as agents that reproduce oppression and exclusion, but also to direct efforts towards the construction of emancipatory, not medicalizing and socially referenced educational policies.
