Objective: to describe the history of the Workers Training Project for the Large-Scale Health Area. Method: This has a historical-social nature, whose object was the historical trajectory of the “Larga Escala” Project in the State of Piauí, Brazil in the period from 1982 to 1996. Concepts of history and memory were used from the perspective of Le Goff and Delgado, as well as in the concepts and methods of oral history from the point of view of Meihy and Ribeiro. Primary sources were the oral testimonies of seven nurses who participated in the Project, as teachers and students, in the pedagogical and professional training courses and who agreed to participate in the research. Secondary sources consisted of books and articles related to the theme, pertinent to the historical, political and social context of the time. Results: This project was developed under the influence of political, social, economic and historical determinants that allowed reflections on this experience in the area of training human resources in nursing. It resulted in a historical legacy of integration, teaching and work with inclusive and citizen perspectives using active methods in this type of teaching. Final considerations: Advances and setbacks were basic characteristics in the Nursing teaching process in Piauí. It was possible to identify and contribute nurses from Piauí who were pioneers in the evolution of this process of teaching and learning the profession, as well as a historical analysis of the installation, structuring and improvement of secondary nursing education in the State of Piauí.
