Resumo: This study aimed to understand how teaching of graphs has been proposed in the statistical classes at the early years of elementary school. The study was realized in 5 school of Metropolitan Area of Recife - Pernambuco – Brazil. Twenty-two primary school teachers participated and answered to one mixed questionnaire and one semi-structured interview that identified: the types of graphs chosen to classes, the graphs comprehension skills prioritized by the teachers and, the approaches to teaching statistics when they use these representations. From a Content Analysis, we find that the bar chart is the most frequent in the classroom and that such use may be associated mainly with a view of ease and great use of this type of representation in the media and textbooks. The teaching approaches adopted involve the exploration of stages of information processing and, to a limited extent, research. In such approaches, the processes of comprehension are prioritized mainly through the reading of graphs and, to a lesser extent, the construction of graphs. These results alert us to the need for teachers to consider the technologies and their potentialities in working with these representations.
