Gender and sexuality: the perception of physical education teacher

The present study analyzes the knowledge of physical education teachers working in basic education in public and private high schools in the city of Iguatu-CE, in relation to gender and sexuality issues. We carried out a field research, through the analysis of a semi-structured interview with seven open questions, answered by six physical education teachers from public and private schools in the city. The results show that the teachers do not have in-depth knowledge on issues related to gender and sexuality, both in the general and school contexts. All teachers exposed a lack of information, as well as confusion in terminologies about the subject. The study also revealed that even those who had partial knowledge on the subject showed a lack of theoretical foundation and sometimes did not know how to deal with situations related to sexuality that occurred in the classroom.
