Resumo: | This dissertation aims to discuss the relation between social origin and educational achievement of Brazilian students, especially in regards to their allocation within the tertiary level. Its object is the Brazilian higher education system in the decade between 2006 and 2016. For such reason, it will start by briefly presenting the sociological theoretical discussion on the relation between social inequality and education, particularly in the tertiary level. After that, it will introduce the context in which its object presents itself by: swiftly describing the history and current situation of mandatory schooling and basic education in Brazil, which precedes and mostly determines the body of possible applicants to the upper level of education; thereafter, it will summarize the history of higher education in the country, while also making short comments on the most important changes that affected the system in the last 25 years including new legislation; finally, it will compile some results from local studies on entrance and internal inequalities in the national higher education system. Following that, the data from the Census of Higher Education (Censo da Educação Superior) will be used to create a general overview of the transformations that the country s superior education system went through during the period, taking into account changes in the institutional and individual levels - including the profile of the places occupied by students by field of study. Lastly, two multinomial logistic models will be used to analyze two trienniums of data from the Brazilian National Examination of Student Performance (Exame Nacional de Desempenho dos Estudantes) years 2006, 2007 and 2008; and 2014, 2015 and 2016. Both models include race, geographic region, sex, age and family education among the independent variables; the dependents variables are, on their turn, created by a combination of characteristics of the places held by senior students in the Brazilian higher education system (called destinations ). The first model s is comprised by the shift of the day in which classes take place (day or night), the system to which the institution belongs (public or private) and the type of degree the program grants its students. The second model s dependent variable is comprised by a combination of the aforementioned categories plus field of study (program). The results of both models are, then, used to determine the profile of the places senior students of either a privileged or unprivileged socioeconomic background are most likely to occupy in their last year before graduation. The difference between those two profiles, and their temporal variation is also noted. |

Submitted by Boris Flegr (boris@uerj.br) on 2021-01-07T18:51:56Z No. of bitstreams: 1 dissertacao Filipe Peixoto.pdf: 2028147 bytes, checksum: 7fd9d1a60615b496bbb4953a76469666 (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-01-07T18:51:56Z (GMT).
