Through this research, I investigated the meanings attributed by a volunteer teacher of Portuguese as host language to a group of refugees to the experience lived during the classes at an NGO. The approach used to do the research followed the principles of Exploratory Practice, according to Moraes Bezerra (2003) and Miller (2004). Exploratory Practice was chosen because it stimulateds reflection about the teacher and the teaching context through a process of collaborative research. The tool used for data generation were interviews that were transcribed and divided into scenes for the accomplishment of the analysis with the objective of constructing knowledge about the context lived by this volunteer teacher since there is not much research addressing the teacher in these situations. For the analysis, the following construct was used discursive practices according to Maingueneau (2015) and allied to the reflections of Deusdará (2015) Arantes (2015) Rizental (2016) and Amado (2014) to build understanding about Portuguese language teaching at a humanistic practice of teaching focusing on the subject as a constructed being that needs to express himself in a new linguistic reality.
