Between gamers and fans: performance and identity of videogame players

Resumo: The purpose of this article is to discuss the relation between two actors: the gamer and the videogame fan. The debate includes the self-recognition of players as fans or as gamers, the elaboration of their identities in relation to these denominations and the stigmas they carry. The analysis is held through a questionnaire applied in gaming communities and in-depth interviews with players. From the results, we identified two main player profiles in the community: the one who produces content (player-producer) and the one who consumes (player-viewer). Among the main contributions, we highlight the perception of online players' encounters as fan communities, the valorisation of the fan's self-recognition process and the similarities and differences between fans and gamers, from the perspective of the players themselves.

O debate inclui o autorreconhecimento dos jogadores como fãs ou como gamers, a elaboração de suas identidades em relação a estas denominações e os estigmas que elas carregam. A análise é feita por meio de questionário aplicado em comunidades de jogos e entrevista em profundidade com jogadores. A partir dos resultados, identificamos dois perfis principais de jogador na comunidade: aquele que produz conteúdo (jogador-produtor) e aquele que consome (jogador-espectador).
