The messages behind the methods: The Authoritarian Pedagogical Legacy in Western Concert Dance Technique Training and Rehearsals

Resumo: This study reveals information about the heritage of authoritarian teaching methods that is passed down in the dance field and about the possibilities for incorporating elements of the twentieth-century progressive educational thought into dance studio classes and rehearsals. To expose and investigate the roots of this disturbing pedagogical heritage and the ideologies that underpin it, a definition and exposition of authoritarian or destructive dance teaching behaviors are offered first. Next, an overview of how the dance community has responded is presented. This unmasking of dance teaching philosophies and practices can hopefully pave the way for healthier, more humane learning environments for dance students and professional dancers.

Para exponer e investigar las raíces de este perturbador patrimonio pedagógico y las ideologías que lo respaldan, se presenta una definición y exposición de comportamientos autoritarios o destructivos en la educación de danza. Luego, mostramos una descripción general de cómo ha respondido la comunidad de danza. Se espera que este desenmascaramiento de las prácticas y filosofías de enseñanza de la danza pueda allanar el camino para entornos de aprendizaje más saludables y humanos para los estudiantes de danza y bailarines profesionales.Este estudo revela informações sobre a herança de métodos de ensino autoritários transmitidos no campo da dança e sobre as possibilidades de incorporar elementos do pensamento educacional progressista do século XX em aulas e ensaios de dança. Para expor e investigar as raízes dessa herança pedagógica perturbadora e as ideologias que a sustentam, uma definição e exposição de comportamentos autoritários ou destrutivos no ensino da dança são apresentadas. Depois, mostramos uma visão geral de como a comunidade da dança tem respondido.
