Phraseological dictionaries: what can we expect from these cultural treasures?

Resumo: : The paper analyzes the treatment given to entries in a collection of lexicographic repertoires of the Portuguese language and of bilingual dictionaries, in the Portuguese-English direction. The research takes some theoretical assumptions of Bilingual Phraseography (Olímpio de Oliveira Silva) and cliché books and dictionaries, object of comparison to guide this analysis. It aims to (i) find out how these materials present the phraseological units and their translations; (ii) seek a prototype entry frame for a glossary object of a postdoctoral project. The results indicate the existence of a variety of dictionaries and monolingual Phrase books of the Portuguese language, however, the bilingual ones, in the Portuguese-English direction are scarce and they do not always present lexicographic entries with examples, which seems to be limiting for certain users of this material. The survey justifies the need for development of new phraseological dictionaries.

The survey justifies the need for development of new phraseological dictionaries.O artigo analisa o tratamento dado a verbetes de uma coletânea de repertórios de caráter lexicográfico monolíngues da língua portuguesa e de dicionários bilíngues, na direção português-inglês. O trabalho fundamenta-se em alguns pressupostos teóricos da Fraseografia bilíngue (OLÍMPIO DE OLIVEIRA SILVA, 2007) e em repertórios e dicionários, objeto de comparação para nortear a análise. Objetiva-se (i) descobrir como esses materiais apresentam as unidades fraseológicas e suas traduções; (ii) buscar um referencial de verbete prototípico para um glossário, objeto de uma pesquisa de pós-doutoramento. Os resultados apontam a existência de uma variedade de dicionários e obras monolíngues da língua portuguesa, contudo, os bilíngues, na dreção português-inglês são escassos e nem sempre apresentam verbetes lexicográficos com exemplos, o que parece ser limitador para certos usuários desse material.
