Resumo: This study describes experiences of prejudice and discrimination by blackwomen in a public university and their coping strategies. A descriptive qualitative studywas conducted through interviews with 15 women between the ages of 22 to 55. The datacollected were submitted to content analysis giving rise to the categories: conceptionsabout being a black woman; experiences of prejudice and discrimination in the university;strategies for coping with prejudice and discrimination. It has been found that the conceptof being a black woman necessarily involves the challenge of constructing a positiveself-image and identity and a perspective of resistance. Prejudice and discrimination atthe university have manifested themselves through experiences that indicate hostility,rejection, and impediments. The strategies of coping with prejudice and discriminationinvolve family support, involvement with aesthetics, religiosity and ancestry of Africanmatrix and the participation in organized groups of black students within the university.

Foi realizado um estudo qualitativo descritivo por meio de entrevista com 15 mulheres na faixa etária de 22 até 55 anos. Os dados coletados foram submetidos à análise de conteúdo dando origem as categorias: concepções sobre ser mulher negra; experiências de preconceito e discriminação na universidade; estratégias de enfrentamento do preconceito e da discriminação. Constatou-se que a concepção de ser mulher negra envolve necessariamente o desafio de construir uma auto­imagem e identidade positivas e uma perspectiva de resistência. O preconceito e discriminação na universidade manifestaram-se por meio de experiências que indicam hostilidade, rejeição e impedimentos.
