MEMORIES OF SCIENCE FAIRS: INTERVIEWS WITH PARTICIPANTS OF STUDENT SCIENCE FAIRS IN THE 1960S AND 1970S IN SÃO PAULO

Resumo: | Science fairs have been considered important non-formal spaces for science education. In this study, we aimed to understand the view that exhibitors at the first science fairs in Brazil, in São Paulo, in the 1960s and 1970s, have about the science fairs in which they participated and the meaning that such fairs had in their trajectories. We conducted 15 interviews with 12 men and 3 women who were between 10 and 18 years old. Respondents point out that science fairs were positive experiences, with opportunities for practical activities and prominence on the part of students. Respondents associated experimentation as a fundamental part of the scientific method and mentioned the motivating role that science teachers played in their teaching and participation in fairs. Among the six respondents who followed careers in scientific research, five recognize their participation in the fair as a decisive driver of their vocations. |

Las ferias de ciencias son consideradas importantes espacios no formales para la educación científica. En este estudio, buscamos comprender la visión que tienen los expositores de las primeras ferias de ciencias en Brasil, en São Paulo, en las décadas de 1960 y 1970, sobre las ferias de ciencias en las que participaron y el significado que tales ferias tuvieron en sus trayectorias. Realizamos 15 entrevistas a 12 hombres y 3 mujeres que tenían entre 10 y 18 años. Los encuestados señalan que las ferias de ciencias fueron experiencias positivas, con oportunidades para actividades prácticas y protagonismo por parte de los estudiantes. Los encuestados asociaron la experimentación como parte fundamental del método científico y mencionaron el papel motivador que los docentes de ciencias desempeñaban en su docencia y participación en ferias. Entre los seis encuestados que siguieron carreras en la investigación científica, cinco reconocen su participación en la feria como un motor decisivo de sus vocaciones.Feiras de ciências têm sido consideradas importantes espaços não formais de educação de ciências. Neste estudo, buscamos compreender a visão que expositores das primeiras feiras de ciências no Brasil, em São Paulo, nas décadas de 1960 e 1970, têm sobre as feiras de ciências em que participaram e o significado que tais feiras tiveram em suas trajetórias. Realizamos 15 entrevistas com 12 homens e 3 mulheres que tinham entre 10 e 18 anos de idade. Os entrevistados apontam que as feiras de ciências foram experiências positivas, com oportunidades de atividades práticas e protagonismo por parte dos alunos. Os entrevistados associaram a experimentação como uma parte fundamental do método científico e mencionaram o papel motivador que os professores de ciências tiveram no seu ensino e sua participação nas feiras.
