Resumo: In this paper, we review the lecture of Professor Francisco Eduardo Vieira (UFPB), whom focused in the historiography of Traditional Grammar (GT), its epistemology and application to language teaching. Vieira (2020) argues that GT should not be understood only as a book, content, discipline or doctrine in the opposite sense of science, since the GT is a Linguistic Theory. To justify his point, Vieira is guided by the thoughts of Laudan (1978) and presents the historical path of GT in different approaches until the general proposal of the usage of GT for language teaching. The base of his lecture is the idea that the phrase, as the maximum unit of analysis, is a linguistic category that needs to be studied not only in linguistic research, but, and above all, in Portuguese teaching.
